Problem Statement

Payed was founded in 2021, and it has processed transactions totaling more than NGN 4 trillion. However, it faced a major challenge which was the mobile app developed progressively without an existing design file. As a result of this, it became very difficult for engineers to maintain the app's development and be consistent with the design language.

Research and Discovery

To begin, we utilised app analytics to better understand user and stakeholder pain points and preferences. During this process, we discovered that users found it difficult to use a few of the many features supported by the Payed app due to design inconsistencies, causing a lot of confusion and dissatisfaction among our current users.

Ideation and Concept Development

Developed prototypes using iterative design processes. As Payed is a small startup company, they needed to ship things quickly, so we designed a component style guide for developers rather than a robust design system.

Iteration and Testing

Conducted usability testing with target users to gather feedback on the redesigned app. Iteratively refined the design based on user insights, focusing on improving usability and addressing new pain points.

Outcome and Impact

The redesigned Payed app saw a significant increase in user engagement and retention. This effort contributed to the app's success and led to the app getting acquired by Sterling Bank of Nigeria; a commercial bank.

Reflection and Lessons Learned

I realised how important user-centered design and iterative testing are in creating successful mobile applications. Achieving a successful outcome required close collaboration with engineers throughout the design process.
